The diagram gives some idea, though not particularly accurately, of the extent to which the old village of Bothwellhaugh was submerged under the waters of Strathclyde Park. With the exception of Calder Place and part of Haugh Place, the remainder of the houses are underwater. It is interesting to note that the sites of the whole of the colliery, the two schools, the Church, Gospel Hall and Miners' Welfare are outside the flooded area. Perhaps, surprisingly too, the area occupied by the present Theme Park is well clear of the village and is probably located on the site of the "bing". The name "Drowned Village" was the title of a BBC programme about Bothwellhaugh, which was based on the excellent filming of Joe Griffiths, a former resident. |
